Description:

The scene in the synagogue at Capernaum is tense to say the least as our text begins. Jesus started the Jews grumbling by claiming to be the bread that came down from heaven. He then turned their grumbling into astonishment and confusion by implying that the bread was His flesh! The room erupted in sharp disputation over the meaning of this enigmatic claim until Jesus removed all doubt by explicitly telling them they must "eat his flesh and drink his blood" in order to have eternal life. In some of the most shocking verses in the Gospels, Jesus continues to emphasize this metaphor, thereby revealing the details of true saving faith and laying the foundation of the mysterious relationship He will have with true believers. We will do our best to describe this indescribable union where true believers abide in Jesus and Jesus in them! Ultimately we will rejoice in the feast Jesus invites us to enjoy, as well as guard ourselves against our enemy who specifically targets this awesome source of Kingdom Power-- the indescribable sacred union.
