Description:

As Daniel's situation in Babylon continues to unfold in this first chapter, we find him deeply embroiled with his captors' attempts to totally assimilate him into Babylonian culture. He seems to have little trouble with some aspects of this indoctrination, like the lessons on culture and religion. But his "sticking point" is over the food he will eat. We will analyze his stand against the king and determine just why he felt the food would defile him. As a result, we will see his defiance as an unwavering refusal to compromise his relationship with Yahweh. Oh that men and women of our age would dare to be Daniel! We will ask ourselves whether our own culture and even our churches still believe that truth is non-negotiable or whether "right and wrong" are relative to our circumstances. In the end, we will determine that if we abide by God's word as Daniel did, it is not only possible but virtually assured we will remain faithful-- even in a pagan court.
